To foster a thriving filmmaking community in the Greater Milwaukee area, N STUDIOS creative arts hub and Marquette University are launching an Emerging Filmmaker Fellowship program, the university announced today. This Artist in Residence program will encourage collaboration, networking, resource sharing, peer-to-peer feedback and professional development education for local, emerging filmmakers.
The Emerging Filmmaker Fellowship program will give filmmakers resources and support, including a collaborative place to work, filmmaking and editing equipment, and mentorship. Two filmmaker fellowships will be available in 2019: an open fellowship for a filmmaker working in any genre and a social justice fellowship for a filmmaker working on a Milwaukee-based social issues documentary.
Marquette University will provide support for the fellowships through its shared office space at the N STUDIOS creative arts hub, production facilities, equipment and as-needed consultation with J. William and Mary Diederich College of Communication faculty, including Joseph Brown, assistant professor of digital media and performing arts; Kristin Holodak, assistant professor of digital media and performing arts; and other video engineers and editing professionals.
Collaborating with N STUDIOS is a win-win for Marquette University's Diederich College of Communication and for Milwaukee's creative community, said Brown, who will serve as coordinator of the Emerging Filmmaker Fellowship program. We'll be giving Marquette students access to filmmakers who can serve as mentors and role models, and we'll be providing support to fellows through office and production space and the support of our faculty filmmakers. The films created by these filmmaker fellows will enrich our local arts landscape and further discourse on topics of importance to our region.
Each fellow will be expected to produce a final cut of a short film, feature film or web-based series by Spring 2020; give two public talks about their project at Marquette University; and hold a work-in-progress screening and regularly interact with Marquette University students.
Establishing the Emerging Filmmaker Fellowship program will help support the careers of aspiring filmmakers from the greater Milwaukee region, cultivating greater depth and diversity within our local arts culture, said Lisa Caesar, chief operating officer at N STUDIOS. Partnering with Marquette University helps introduce a whole new generation of filmmakers to the N STUDIOS creative arts hub and our vast network of connections with producers, artists, filmmakers and other creative professionals around the country.
Each fellow will receive a stipend of $2,500 to assist with production of their creative works, in addition to complimentary shared workspace in the Marquette University office in the N STUDIOS hub; access to Diederich College of Communication production spaces, including a TV studio, green screen studio, editing facilities and sound recording spaces; access to filmmaking equipment; and a one-year complimentary membership to N STUDIOS.
Applications are available online and are due February 22, 2019. The 2019 fellowships will begin in April 2019 and run through Spring 2020. Applicants must be 18 years of age and reside in the Greater Milwaukee region.
