True to its mission of nurturing local theatre artists, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre (MCT) presents the Montgomery Davis Play Development Series staged reading of AN EVENING WITH CARL SANDBURG by Jonathan Gillard Daly on Monday, October 19, 2015 at 7:30 pm. The playwright himself will perform the reading of this one-actor piece and his wife Gale Childs Daly will direct.
Carl Sandburg was once a household name in America, famed for his poetry, his definitive biography of Abraham Lincoln, and his books for children. Throughout his life, he travelled across the country, guitar in hand, appearing before audiences and entertaining thousands with his recitations of poetry, his eclectic repertoire of folk songs, and whatever personal reminiscences and observations of the American scene came into his head.
AN EVENING WITH CARL SANDBURG is an affectionate attempt to recreate one of those "concerts": to introduce his life and work to people who were born after his death in 1967, and to remind those who do remember him what a gifted poet, progressive thinker, and versatile talent was Carl Sandburg.
Playwright Jonathan Gillard Daly's musical THE DALY NEWS was the inaugural reading in the Montgomery Davis Play Development Series in 2007 and went on to be a fully-staged MCT production in 2008. As a playwright, his work has been produced at Virginia Stage Company, Sacramento Theatre Company, and PCPA Theaterfest. Daly is an associate artist at Milwaukee Repertory Theater and a company member at Great River Shakespeare Festival. As an actor, he has performed with First Stage, Renaissance Theaterworks, Next Act Theatre, American Players Theatre, Repertory Theatre of Saint Louis, Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival, Utah Shakespeare Festival, PCPA Theaterfest, Indiana Repertory Theatre, and Actors Theatre of Louisville. A Milwaukee native, Daly is a graduate of Marquette High School and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
AN EVENING WITH CARL SANDBURG will be performed on Monday, October 19, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. in the Skylight Bar & Bistro, located on the second level of the Broadway Theatre Center, 158 N. Broadway in Milwaukee's Historic Third Ward. Tickets for the reading are Pay-What-You-Can at the door. Seating is first-come, first-served.
