Who Wants Cake? Announces New Young Actor's Troupe: The Upstart Players

Who Wants Cake? is pleased to announce the creation of its new summer youth acting troupe, The Upstart Players. Director Debbie Lannen will be holding auditions at The Ringwald Theatre On June 16th and will cast for the inaugural Upstart production, Kokonut High.

Debbie Lannen has been training young actors for over 25 years at various locations and institutions around southeastern Michigan. One of her previous students, Ashley Shamoon, just appeared in The Ringwald's production of Hurlyburly by David Rabe.

The Upstart Players is a new young actors troupe whose home will be The Ringwald Theatre in Ferndale, MI. The program is for actors ages 13-18 who are interested in training in a professional theatre environment and appearing in a professionally produced show.

Tim Kelly's Kokonut High, a zany comedy set on a tropical island with gangsters, high school students, and pirates, will run August 13-15, 2010 at The Ringwald Theatre.

Auditions will be held Wednesday, June 16 from 6:30PM-8:30PM at The Ringwald Theatre, 22742 Woodward Ave, Ferndale, MI 48220. Please prepare a one minute monologue of your choosing. There will also be cold reading from the script.

Who Wants Cake? opened the doors to their resident home, The Ringwald, in May 2007 with Fatal Attraction: A Greek Tragedy. Quickly, The Ringwald became a mainstay of Detroit's theatre community. Since opening their doors, Who Wants Cake? has been offering up slice after slice of successful shows including The Bad Seed, The Book of Liz, Rent, and [title of show]. Who Wants Cake? was named the 2008 and 2009 Best Theatre Group in Channel 4's Vote 4 The Best contest, the 2009 Best Theatrical Troupe by Real Detroit, and Best Place to see Local Theatre in the 2010 Best of Detroit poll.
