We meet Jason and his mother Margery shortly after the passing of their father & husband in the small rural town of Cypress, Texas. They are hurt and they are mad. A local pastor encourages Margery to run a puppet group to offer her a distraction. Jason, of course, must attend to keep her company. Jason's repressed feelings of anger and regret intensify until Jason finally finds an outlet: his puppet, Tyrone. Tyrone begins to take on a life of his own. He grows stronger and stronger, more foul-mouthed, irreverent, and dangerous. Is Tyrone demon-possessed? Margery, the pastor, other students, and Jason himself try to control Tyrone - but can they find what's keeping him alive? Hand to God explores the fragile state of faith, morality, and the ties that bind us.
The script is written with such earnestness and humanity that not a second feels unbelievable. Robert Askins, the author, uses raw, seemingly simple but beautifully composed dialogue, to give the characters life. The Grand Rapids cast includes veteran actress Amy McFadden. Her acting career spans 20+ years including stage, film, commercial television, and audio book narration. She and the rest of the cast bring a natural existence to each character that will captivate audiences.
