The New Theatre Project is gearing up for a major change. In the aptly named Season 3: Reinvention, TNTP introduces new staff members, new branding, a new website, a new mission statement, a new free theater program, and an entirely new season of work.

TNTP celebrates the idea of reinvention in all things with their third season. Financial troubles plagued the small company for some time by the end of the second season while artistic successes were triumphing. After a successful fundraising campaign, TNTP is back and ready for something new. This has brought the company a new Associate Artistic Director, Emilie C. Samuelsen and Marketing Assistant, Kurt Bonnell.

The new website, season trailer, and mission can all be found at the revamped www.thenewtheatreproject.org with links to all our social networking sites. Stay in touch with TNTP for special offers and schedules all year long.

Lastly, TNTP is thrilled to debut the new Basement Series which will house the New Work Series and workshops of new work that may make its debut on the mainstage the following year. This Series is entirely free with donations accepted.

Reinvention is refreshing and brings new life and energy. This season, TNTP offers reinventions of two century-old plays, a complete reworking of one its most successful collaborations, and a world premiere drama that takes coming of age reinvention as its theme.

SEASON 3: REINVENTION

Woyzeck
an interactive theatrical haunted house
by Georg Büchner
in an adaptation by Audra Lord
directed by Brian Carbine
with original music by Fern Cloak?
in a co-production with Threefold Productions and the Brendalinda Performance Collective??

October 18-November 4, 2012??

An extremely prolific young playwright dies without completing one of his greatest masterpieces. Woyzeck—a terrifying, psychological play about the disastrous effects of human jealousy—ies incomplete, fragmented, and waiting for any artist crazy enough to take it on. TNTP joins forces with Threefold Productions and the Brendalinda Performance Collection to transform the piece into an interactive haunted house where the audience decides how best to complete Büchner's play.

Wolf Cry Wolf
world premiere drama?
by Kevin Kautzman
directed by Emilie C. Samuelsen

December 2012?

When Steph returns home to North Dakota for the first time in years and surprises her estranged childhood friend Jane, they descend into their memories and relive the summer Jane told Steph her deepest secret: she knows how to turn into a wolf. Wolf Cry Wolf looks at the fine line between memory and imagination and at the lies we tell to survive our shadows. A beautiful new play from the playwright of last season's comedy If You Start a Fire [Be Prepared to Burn].??

Edward II
world premiere classical adaptation
based on the play by Christopher Marlowe
in an adaptation by Jason Sebacher
directed by Keith Paul Medelis

March 2013??

Before Shakespeare, Marlowe writes an epic tragedy about a young and naïve king and his obsession with his once banished lover. A deeply erotic and shocking tale of a homosexual love affair that destroys two men and the fate of an entire nation. TNTP produces the classical play in a wildly reimagined way for a contemporary audience.

The American Crowbar Case
a folk-opera?
featuring the music of Match by Match
with a book by Jason Sebacher?
directed by Keith Paul Medelis??

June 2013??

A revival and dramatic reworking of one of TNTP's most successful collaborations—a true reinvention of ourselves. In 1846, Phineas Gage suffers an accident that drives a 3 foot iron rod through his skull. Incredibly, he recovers miraculously in almost no time but is described in the only brief news article about his case as "no longer Gage." The American Crowbar Case, based on the concept album from local musicians Match by Match, imagines the life of Gage and the effects of the accident on his new wife Constance and a mysterious stranger known only as Missy. A story about the consuming power of love and its remarkable ability to transform in an instant.

BASEMENT SERIES

New Work Series
Ongoing throughout the season, TNTP presents workshops and readings of never-before-seen work from local, national, and international playwrights. Playwrights will join their readings in person or via Skype to gain feedback for their play’s future development. Many plays from the Series have gone on to receive world premiere staging at The New Theatre Project. This year’s series is produced in partnership with the Ypsilanti District Library.

Uncivil Unions
by Michael Shapiro
directed by Emilie C. Samuelsen

The first in our Educational New Work Series, Uncivil Unions is written by Michael Shapiro, Pioneer High School junior, and will receive a workshop staging at an undetermined time in the season. Development readings will be conducted throughout the year.

inbetween
written and performed by Dora Diaspora
conceived and directed by Keith Paul Medelis

A developing performance piece on the nature of gender and trans identity. Comprised of truths from individuals who identify themselves as transgender, this solo performance attempts to generate conversation on the nature of the gray area in between gender.

This unique production is aimed for performances in both Ypsilanti and New York City sometime next summer.
