Ferndale's Ringwald Theatre continues its season devoted to The Power of Words with the southeast Michigan premier ofreasons to be pretty by Detroit's own Neil LaBute. All performances of reasons to be pretty will be held at The Ringwald Theatre 22742 Woodward Ave, Ferndale MI 48220. Performances begin on Friday, October 11 and play Fridays-Mondays thru Monday, Novermber 4.
reasons to be pretty was the first of Neil LaBute's plays to be staged on Broadway where it was nominated for a Tony award for Best Play. Following The Shape of Things and Fat Pig, it is the final play in a trilogy devoted to the modern day obsession over physical beauty.
A love story about the impossibility of love, reasons to be pretty introduces us to Greg, who really, truly adores his girlfriend, Steph. Unfortunately, he also thinks she has a few physical imperfections, and when he casually mentions them, all hell breaks loose. Add to the mix Greg's hyper masculine friend Kent and his hot wife Carly and you get a hopelessly romantic drama about the hopelessness of romance.
In reviewing the Broadway production for the New York Times, Ben Brantley said, "...reasons flows with the compelling naturalness of overheard conversation" and concluded, "It's never easy to say what you mean, or to know what you mean to begin with. With a delicacy that belies its crude vocabulary, reasons to be pretty celebrates the everyday heroism in the struggle to find out."
reasons to be pretty features Joel Mitchell as Greg, Dyan Bailey as Steph, Bryan Lark as Kent, and Christa Coulter as Carly. Joe Bailey directs, stage management by Katy Schoetzow. Dan Morrison is designing the set.
