MorrisCo Art Theatre will perform the widely popular hit comedy "The Foreigner" by Larry Shue, at The Riverside Arts Center, 76 N. Huron Street, Ypsilanti, MI 48197, November 11-12 at 8 PM and November 13 at 2 PM and 8 PM.
Based on what the New York Post called a "devilishly clever idea", "The Foreigner" is a comic carnival ride through backwoods Georgia to a remote fishing lodge, where Charlie, a sad sack Englishman recovering from his wife's nearly pathological unfaithfulness, is dragged by his old friend Froggy. Charlie is so determined to wallow in his isolation and inadequacy that friend Froggy hatches a plot to discourage the local rubes from bothering him by passing him off as the terminally shy native of some exotic foreign country where they don't speak English. As Charlie settles in, however, he finds that being the foreigner works a sort of enchanted liberation on him where all things become possible. Thinking he understands nothing, his fellow lodgers tell him everything, and in return Charlie casts his own spell of enchantment that is both heart-warming and hilarious.
Broadway.com said about The Foreigner,"When was the last time that you saw a comedy so funny that it actually made you slap your knee?"
The Chicago Reader said,"Not only is (Larry Shue's) plot as tightly and logically constructed as a Rube Goldberg invention, but The Foreigner is linguistically brilliant... The Foreigner is filled with puns, double-talk, and manipulations of language that are as intellectually dazzling as the humor is emotionally satisfying. "
Featured in MorrisCo's production are local award-winning actors Larry Rusinsky as Charlie, Patricia Rector as Betty Meeks, Steve Elliot as Ellard Simms, and Peter Knox as Owen Musser. Direction is by Susan Morris, who also directed last year's "Night of The Iguana", named by AnnArbor.com as one of 2009's Best Local Productions.
"...Rusinsky anchors the cast with his charisma. As Drummond, he communicates various layers--intelligence, fierce conviction, rationality, and compassion--with a quiet confidence." Ann Arbor News review of Rusinsky in Ann Arbor Civic's "Inherit The Wind".
" ...Knox...(performs his role)... with sensitivity and physical skill, ...delivering a show-stopping version of Lucky's 'think' speech." AnnArbor.com reviewing Knox in last year's Emergent Arts production of "Waiting For Godot".
