As one family gathers to celebrate the life of their matriarch, they have a lot to say about the role of women-especially African-American woman-in history...and they do it through songs you already know. With songs ranging from "Oh Happy Day" to "I Will Survive" and the music of artists from Billie Holiday to Beyonce, you'll be tempted to sing along.
"Sistas," written by Dorothy Marcic, makes its Michigan premiere at Meadow Brook Theatre on the campus of Oakland University in Rochester from April 20 through May 15, 2016.
"The women gather in the attic of their grandmother's house to get ready for her service and share memories," says Travis Walter, MBT artistic director. "They take us on a journey from the 1930s through the 60s and into the 90s, and they use music to do it. The songs are great. Everyone will know so many of them. It's a great way for MBT to tell another story that we know our audiences will love to hear."
"Sistas" is a chance for MBT audiences to meet a few new faces including Felicia Renae as Tamika, Monica J. Palmer as Gloria, Jennifer Fouché as Roberta and Lucy Shropshire as Simone. Rounding out the cast is Stacy White, who was just seen in "Calendar Girls," as Heather.
"Sistas" is directed by Travis W. Walter with music direction by Zachary Ryan. Tyrick Wiltez Jones is the choreographer and Deon Ridley is the associate choreographer. Terry Carpenter is the stage manager, with set design by Jen Price Fick, costumes by Mary Elizabeth Winther, lighting by Matthew J. Fick and sound by Mike Duncan.
Zachary Ryan also directs the band and plays piano. Joining him are Sig Helper (Guitar), Timothy D. Martuch (Bass) and Nick Matthews (Percussion).
