The Emergent Arts Company presents Waiting For Godot by Samuel Beckett
Ypsilanti- The Emergent Arts Company will present the play Waiting For Godot by Samuel Beckett at The Riverside Arts Center in Ypsilanti Michigan, September 17-27, 2009.
Long before Seinfeld discovered the comic possibilities of a show about nothing, Samuel Beckett wrote Waiting For Godot. Written in French and translated into English by Beckett himself, the play, which sent shock waves through the Theatre World, has become a classic in dozens of languages throughout the world. The lead roles of Gogo and Didi have been aspired to by every male actor, and just this year the play has been performed in New York with Nathan Lane, Bill Irwin and John Goodman. The New York Times calls the play "a brilliant piece of craftsmanship, which exactly matches its form to its content, while holding a mirror to its audience." In London, Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan starred in a West End production.
In Waiting For Godot, two men wait for a third man to arrive. They seem not to know where they are, or much about where they've been. With a combination of witty banter, wordplay, and comic philosophy, they manage to create a universe from nothing, amusing each other and the audience with a stream of vaudevillian patter like Laurel and Hardy on LSD.
Local actors Larry Rusinsky and Steve Elliott will play Vladimir (Didi) and Estragon(Gogo) respectively, with Peter Knox as Lucky, Tom Underwood as Pozzo, and Graeme Taylor as the Boy. Direction is by Timothy Henning.
