The Mosaic Singers are taking audiences from Detroit straight to the bright lights of Broadway! Filled with their signature powerhouse vocal performances, the critically acclaimed group will bring Singsation! Mosaic Singers in Concert presented by Pepsi to the Detroit Film Theatre inside the DIA on March 12th and 13th, 2011.
Under the direction of DeLashea Middleton, Co-Artistic Director and Director of Music Programs, Singsation! has a little something for everyone. The show opens with the music they are best known for- classical, spiritual, and world music. After intermission the Singers put their own colorful spin on Broadway favorites and little known gems from shows like "Spring Awakening", "13 the Musical" and "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee." This final show has a special significance to the young artists - the Broadway production of "Spelling Bee" featuring Mosaic alumni Celia Keenan-Bolger for which she earned a Tony award nomination for "Best Featured Actress in a Musical."
"Broadway has given audiences a no pressure opportunity to confront, discuss and relate to the challenges that young people face everyday," stated Ms. Middleton. "This year we are paying homage to a few Broadway musicals that brought growing up and talking about it to the forefront of everyone's mind. We are singing about life's crazy turns, getting more responsibility and the emotional rollercoaster that is life."
The internationally acclaimed Mosaic Singers have performed in over 25 states, at The White House and The Kennedy Center. Internationally, they have represented the United States at the World Festival of Children's Theatre in Copenhagen, Denmark, performed at the Millennium Done in London, England and participated in cultural exchanges in Dakar, Senegal and Singapore. They have also performed at a myriad of major local events (the final game at Tiger Stadium, Mayoral and Gubernatorial Inauguration ceremonies, Super Bowl XL festivities) and have been honored to open performances for Sweet Honey and the Rock, Pete Seeger, Al Green, The Temptations, Maya Angelou.
