Paola Gianturco's 'GRANDMOTHER POWER' Exhibition to Open This Month at Dennos Museum

The Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College will present a new exhibition of the works of renowned photographer Paola Gianturco called Grandmother Power: A Global Phenomenon. The exhibition will be shown from September 18th to December 31st.

Grandmother Power: A Global Phenomenon is based off the book of the same title published by powerHouse Books. Grandmother Power won Fore Word Reviews 2012 Book of the Year Award for Women's Studies, the 2013 International Book Award for Multicultural Nonfiction, and the 2013 About.com Readers' Choice Award for Favorite Grand parenting Book. The exhibition will feature images and stories of grandmothers worldwide who are acting courageously and effectively to create a better future for grandchildren everywhere.

There are more grandmothers in the world today than ever before. They are younger, healthier, better educated, and better off than they have ever been. They are energetic and effective, and they are modeling important lessons of collaboration, generosity, patience, perseverance and resilience.

Grandmother Power includes stories of grandmothers in Canada, Swaziland, and South Africa who collaborate to care for AIDS orphans; grandmothers in India who are becoming solar engineers, while those in Thailand fight environmental degradation. The exhibition will include eight powerful stories from Paola's book, highlighting women in South Africa, Swaziland, Thailand, the Philippines, Argentina, Canada, the United States, India, Senegal and indigenous grandmothers from around the globe. Visitors will have a chance to add their own grandmother to the story, through a special digital interactive experience.

"Grandmother Power is unexpected and eye opening. The exhibition will impact visitors at an emotional level and redefine the way many of us think and feel about grandmothers and the important role they play in creating a better future for their grandchildren." said Gene Jenneman, Executive Director of the Dennos, "This is the second project we have done with Paola Ginaturco, having presented Celebrating Women in 2010."

The National Writers Series in association with the opening of the exhibition Grandmother Power at the Dennos Museum Center presents an evening with author Paola Gianturco whose book Grandmother Power: A Global Phenomenon inspired the exhibit on September 17th at 7pm in Millken Auditorium.

There will be a free reception (no ticket required) for Museum Members, NWS Friends and NWS ticket holders starting at 6 PM in the Dennos Museum Center to view the exhibition. A book signing will follow the program.

The Art of: Grandmothering - Tea and conversation (Thursday, November 10th at 12pm)

Let's gather to celebrate the lives and stories of our grandmothers. Join several local grandmothers for an hour of storytelling and sharing, along with an audience Q&A. in conjunction with the exhibition, Grandmother Power, from the Grand Rapids Public Museum. BLACK FRIDAY FUN DAY: Grandmothers Unite! (Friday, November 25th)

Skip the shopping frenzy and bring grandma for a fun-filled day at the Dennos. Check out Grandmother Power and other exhibitions, try out some hands-on artmaking, and spend a few minutes shopping in the Museum Store. The Dennos Museum Center is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm, Thursday until 8pm and Sundays 1pm to 5pm. Admission is $6.00 for adults, $4.00 for children and free to museum members.
