On September 3, 2016, at 8:00 a.m., over 115 Detroit families will be representing Wayne Children's Healthcare Access Program and Fit Kids in a local downtown 5K fun run known as "On the Move in the 'D'" by running the "In the Cut".
Participating families have been attending On the Move for twelve weeks and will be doing their first 5K with the support of Detroit sponsors including; Children's Hospital of Michigan Foundation, Health Department of Detroit, United Healthcare Community Plan, Wayne State School of Medicine., W.K. Kellogg Foundation, Kind Bars, Total Health Care, Health Net of West Michigan, and ESP printing located in Eastern Market. This has been a great Detroit collaboration with participants training at Tolan Playfield alongside local football teams and cheerleading squads in the summer heat.
FitKids360 is an eight week childhood obesity intervention program targeting children between ages 5 and 17 who have a BMI in the 85th percentile or above. FitKids360 meets once a week for two hours for eight weeks and teaches families how to live healthier. The program is taught by a social worker, registered dietitian, and fitness expert and includes about one hour of exercise per week. Once participants complete the FitKids360 program, they are eligible to participate in the On the Move program.
On the Move is an extension of FitKids360 and is a "couch to 5k" program aimed at further helping the families of overweight or obese children who have completed the Fit Kids program. The On the Move program is a weekly, 12 week program to train as a group for a local 5k walk/run. Each week, families meet at Children's Hospital Specialty Center and walk to Tolan Playfield in Detroit, where participants run/jog/walk a pre-determined length of time. By the end of the program, they are prepared to walk/run a 5k. At the end of the training, families run a local race in September together, which is a major highlight of the program.
