Magenta Giraffe Theatre Company of Detroit seeks applications from those who are interested in becoming more involved with the company by becoming members of the board of directors. The company would like to fill all available spots on the board immediately. Applications are due April 12, 2013.
Every 501(c)3 nonprofit organization is required, by law, to have a board of directors. When we think of "board of directors" sometimes we think of words like "stifling" or "bureaucratic," but a good, high functioning board is neither of those things! The board is the life force that pushes the organization on to fulfill its mission and have real impact in the community.
The board must be creative, passionate, and intelligent. The board must constantly be brainstorming and looking for ways to enhance the organization and push it to its boundaries and beyond! The board is ultimately responsible for the effectiveness of the organization. This does not mean that the board becomes a group of administrators, it means the board guides and encourages, remains agile and understanding, and above all, remains faithful to the mission - or adjusts the mission if the climate has changed!
You must apply to be on the board of directors, and if approved, you will have the chance to share your goals of holding office (if that interests you!) on the board. Magenta Giraffe Theatre Company can have a maximum of nine board of directors, three of whom will hold office. Each member's term on the board is one year and is served on a volunteer basis.
Duties of board members include:
Attend a meeting once each month.
Advance the mission of the organization.
Conserve and develop the organization's resources.
Monitor and evaluate organizational performance.
· Serve as ambassadors of the organization and as representatives of the communities the organization serves.
Review and approve organizational budgets, strategic and business plans.
Organize and implement fundraising campaigns.
How to apply: submit a letter of interest outlining your background, your goals and your reasons for wanting to be on Magenta Giraffe's board of directors. Please also submit a professional resume and highlight the skills you think would be useful (do you have fundraising experience, graphic design experience, etc.). All materials should be sent to frannie@magentagiraffe.org. The deadline for submissions is April 12, 2013.
