Circle Theatre, Grand Rapids' go-to destination for exceptional theatrical arts in an intimate setting, has announced their 2018 Season...and it has something for everyone!
Circle's 2018 Season will begin with a Season Kickoff Event on April 6: The Music of Dirty Dancing: In Concert. This one-night-only event is sure to be a hit with audiences as they're transported back to 1963 and whisked away to Kellerman's Resort with "Baby" Houseman and her family. The evening will include a hot dog roast, costume contest, games, silent auction, cash bar, and more! Highlighting memorable music from the movie with songs by 60s greats like Otis Redding, The Drifters, and The Shirelles.
Opening the Main Stage Season is a beloved classic, Into the Woods (May 3-19). Circle will present a fresh twist on a rare modern classic for adults; a timeless yet relevant piece, James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim take everyone's favorite storybook characters and bring them together for both predictable and surprising adventures. The Baker and his wife who wish to have a child, Cinderella who wishes to attend the King's Festival, and Jack who wishes his cow would give milk. Wishes are granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results.
Next up, Aaron Sorkin's A Few Good Men (May 31-June 16). A hit Broadway play about the trial of two Marines for complicity in the death of a fellow Marine at Guantanamo Bay sizzles on stage. The Navy lawyer, a callow young man more interested in softball games than the case, expects a plea bargain and a cover up of what really happened. Prodded by a female member of his defense team, the lawyer eventually makes a valiant effort to defend his clients and, in so doing, puts the military mentality and the Marine code of honor on trial.
In July, Circle is proud to present the Michigan Community Premiere of the 2015 Tony Award-Winning Musical, Fun Home (July 12-28). When her father dies unexpectedly, lesbian graphic novelist Alison dives deep into her past to tell the story of the volatile, brilliant, one-of-a-kind man whose temperament and secrets defined her family and her life. Moving between past and present, Alison relives her unique childhood, her growing understanding of her own sexuality, and the looming, unanswerable questions about her father's hidden desires. A refreshingly honest, wholly original musical about seeing your parents through grown-up eyes.
Circle continues its 2018 Season with a musical and play chosen by audience vote, Leading Ladies (August 9-25) is a hilarious comedy about two Shakespearean actors who find themselves down on their luck. When they hear that an old lady in York, PA is about to die and leave her fortune to her two long lost English nephews, they resolve to pass themselves off as her beloved relatives and get the cash. The trouble is, when they get to York, they find out that the relatives aren't nephews, but nieces! And Bullets Over Broadway (September 6-22) is a musical loaded with big laughs, colorful characters and the songs that made the '20s roar, Bullets Over Broadway is bringing musical comedy back with a bang. This six-time Tony-nominated musical is based on the screenplay of the acclaimed 1994 film by Woody Allen and Douglas McGrath.
Running July 27-30 Magic Circle will continue the tradition of bringing the best of family entertainment to Grand Rapids with Snow White: The Queen's Fair Daughter. Based on the oral story as it was told to The Brothers Grimm in 1808, adventures abound with near-death experiences and new friends made as a part of Snow White's curious time in the woods.
Circle's acclaimed Summer Concert Series will bring the best West Michigan vocalists and musicians back to the Circle stage once again in 2018 with Bringing Sexy Back: Male Pop/Rock Icons (May 7, July 16, September 10), Silver Screen: Academy Award-Winning Songs (May 14, July 23, September 17), Broadway Babes: Dames of the Stage (June 4, August 13), and We'll Take You There: Classic R&B (June 11, August 20).
Circle Theatre will once again open their Lobby Bar on select nights throughout the summer, serving craft beer and wine before the show, at intermission (when applicable) and after the performance; beverages can be enjoyed inside the theatre on those evenings.
