Detroit veterans in need will be much warmer this winter with the support of Gary Hoey and the Detroit Veterans Center, a project of the Michigan Veterans Foundation. The two are teaming up along with Hockeytown Café to make an impact in the lives of local veterans by collecting winter clothing during performances of Gary Hoey's "Ho Ho Hoey's Rockin' Holiday Show" at the City Theatre today, December 6 and Sunday, December 7.
Fans are encouraged to bring items for donation with them to the City Theatre when they arrive for the show. Items needed for women and men include: coats, gloves, scarves, hats, sweaters, long johns, socks and boots. Those who donate will receive a coupon for 20 percent off a meal (Alcohol not included) at Hockeytown Café.
According to the Michigan Veterans Foundation (MVF), an average of one-third of America's homeless are veterans, yet veterans only make up approximately eight percent of the population. This means that on any given night, as many as 250,000 veterans are living on the streets or in shelters.
MVF's main project is the Detroit Veterans Center, which offers transitional housing and resources to help homeless veterans get back on their feet. Some of the resources the center provides include life skills and employment training, healthcare services, support groups (including PTSD), legal assistance, hot meals and clothing. "I'm so happy to help out the local veterans of Detroit," Hoey said. "My brother served in the Army and my nephew is now serving in the Army. I've been performing in the Detroit area for over 20 years, it's like a second home to me. We can't forget those men and woman who have served our country and the ones who continue to protect our freedom."
Gary Hoey's popular "Ho Ho Hoey" series of Christmas CDs and on-air station visits during the holiday season have become an annual staple at hundreds of radio stations nationwide. Moreover, his live interpretation, aptly named "Ho Ho Hoey's Rockin' Holiday Show" continues to grow new fans each year - so much so that Hallmark's musical greeting cards feature two of Gary's "Ho Ho Hoey" classics.
