Go U! The Improv Academy Announces December Workshops And 2010 Classes

Go Comedy! Improv Theater is now taking registrations for its biggest term of classes ever at Go U! The Improv Academy. Classes include Intro to Improv, Advanced Improv, Sketch Comedy Writing, and how to make comedy videos for the web. To register for the winter semester call (248) 327-0575 or email classes@gocomedy.net. For more information visit www.gocomedy.net. Classes will take place at Go Comedy! Improv Theatre, 261 E. Nine Mile Rd. and the Go U! Training Center at 243 E Nine Mile Rd in Ferndale, MI 48220.

Each Go U! class runs for eight weeks beginning Saturday, January 9, 2010, culminating in a class show for friends and family at Go Comedy! Improv Theater in March. Tuition for adult classes is $200. Registration for classes runs until 1pm on January 8th. Any late registrations will incur a $25 fee. A complete class description and term schedule follows.

In addition to its winter 2010 term, Go U! is excited to announce three improvisation workshops this month, including two taught by Second City Detroit alumnus Marc Warzecha. Registration for each workshop is $25 and available online at www.gocomedy.net or by calling (248) 327-0575.

Rock-o-Matic Workshop: Sunday December 13: Noon - 3pm ($25)
Learn the basics of what makes Go Comedy!'s original improvised rock opera so hilariously spectacular. This workshop taught by the band and cast of Rock-o-Matic will teach the basics of musical improvisation.

Extreme "Yes, And!" with Marc Warzecha: Saturday, December 19: Noon-3pm ($25)
This improv workshop for beginning to advanced improv students will focus on agreement in scenes, often called "Yes, and..." Students will perform unique improv exercises and scenes that explore extreme scenic agreement that will heighten the student's ability to use this tool to their advantage in all improv scenarios.

Tools for Sketch Comic Writing with Mark Warzecha
Sunday, December 20 : Noon-3pm ($25)
In this comic sketch writing workshop, students will learn how to jumpstart their ability to create and write great sketch comedy. Students will walk from this workshop with the tools needed to write their own comic sketches. Perfect for improvisers interested in writing, or beginning writers looking to enhance their skills

Marc Warzecha is originally from Detroit, MI and now lives in Los Angeles where he has recently appeared on MAD TV and Reno 911. Marc served as writer/director for the political satire "Kwame a River: The Chronicles of Detroit's Hip Hop Mayor," a 2009 Wilde Award nominee for "Best New Script" and the follow up show "Kwame a River 2: The Wrath of Conyers", now playing. He has worked with The Second City as both an actor and director; most recently directing "BarackStars" in at the Woolly Mammoth theatre in Washington, DC and a national tour of "The Art of Satire", a collaboration with The Economist Magazine. Other directing credits include: "Pratfall of Civilization" (The Second City ETC - Joseph Jefferson nominee: "Best Director"). "War! Now in it's 4th Smash Year!" (Second City Chicago Mainstage- Joseph Jefferson nominee: Best Director, Best Revue, Best Ensemble), and Second City resident shows in Las Vegas and Michigan. Acting credits include six resident stage reviews at the Second City- Detroit, "Romeo and Juliet the Musical" at Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, and SCC's "An Evening with Martin Short." Marc's work as a satirist has been featured on ABC's "Nightline", Newsweek, and in the Washington Post, and he has been a guest on CNN's "Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer" and NPR's "All Things Considered."

Go U! Improv Academy Winter 2010 Class Schedules

The Improv Academy at Go U! is broken into two main programs - Intro and Advanced, as well as a sketch comedy writing, and web shorts class.

Intro 1: Welcome to Improv
Every improv education starts somewhere. Learn the fundamentals of improvisation, basic games, scene work and skills. Get used to being on stage and working with others in a safe, supportive environment. Tuition: $200.

Intro 2: Improv Tools
This class picks up where 101 leaves off, taking those concepts and looking deeper into them. This class looks at the tricks, tips and tools of improv and incorporates them into a variety of games. Tuition: $200.

Intro 3: Scene Work
This class continues to build on the skills learned in 101 and 201 with a focus on scene work. Intro 301 begins to move into elements of long-form improvisation. Tuition: $200.

Intro 4: Improv Games
Games are the bread and butter of every improviser's diet and can be seen at Go Comedy! every weekend. Learn all about improv games from the classics to challenging new games, you'll even learn a few of Go Comedy!'s signature games. Tuition: $200.

Advance Classes
Advance Improv requires some previous improv education. Contact Go Comedy! to find out where you should start.

Advance 1: Scene Work
Shake the cobwebs off your improv or reinvent your approach. Learn the GoU!
Improv Philosophy and be free of the "rules" of improv. This class will focus on how
you create a scene, work with a partner and keep an audience interested. Tuition: $200.

Advance 2: Longform, The Improv Montage
This class will cover the various styles of improv montages. Learn how to weave a series of scenes together to tell a longer story or fun, new ways to keep a set moving. This class will feature La Ronde, the Herald, Location, and more. Tuition: $200.

Additional Classes

Sketch Comedy Writing
Learn how to write, edit and polish scripts for sketch comedy from some of the finest comedy writers in the area. The first three terms focus on style with the fourth term focusing on putting together a show from scripts created in the program.

Sketch 1: Finding Your Voice
Start getting your words out of your head and onto the page. This class will focus on creativity, brainstorming, and creating your comedic voice. It will help you start creating a writer's portfolio. Tuition: $200.

You Tube 101: Go Viral!
Learn every aspect of creating of a comedic You Tube video from concept to completion. This class will cover editing, storyboards, filming, writing, producing and more. By the end of term, each student will create a short comedic film to share with the world. Class size is limited. Having a camera and computer is not mandatory, but man, does it make it easier. Tuition: $150.
