Uproariously funny, witty and very moving, BUTLER is written by the author of last season's hit comedy, BUZZ. Based on actual events that changed the lives of 10,000 slaves, BUTLER is set at the beginning of the Civil War and follows Major General Benjamin Butler, who has just been given command of Fort Monroe in Virginia. The inexperienced but shrewd Butler meets his match when an equally shrewd runaway slave enters the fort and asks for asylum.
Barbara Busby (DETROIT), a founder of the Rep and resident company member is the Director of BUTLER. Last year she directed the highly acclaimed production, SWEET PEA'S MAMA.
Her cast for BUTLER features two veteran performers familiar to Repertory audiences and two newcomers. Todd Hissong (WESTLAND) portrays General Benjamin Butler. Last season Mr. Hissong won the Rep's Subscriber Best Actor Award for his portrayal of T-Bone in THE KISS OF THE SUN FOR PARDON. Robert Grossman (HAMTRAMCK) returns to Detroit and the Rep after a long absence. He last performed at the Rep in the 1998 production, AD ALTARI DEI. Mr. Grossman portrays the Confederate, Major Cary.
Newcomer Pete Podolski (RIVERVIEW) will portray Lieutenant Kelly in BUTLER and newcomer Christian Williams (DETROIT) will portray the runaway slave, Mallory. Resident company member, Lynch Travis (DEARBORN) will take on Stage Manager duties for the production of BUTLER.
