Due to sold-out capacity crowds at the Masonic Temple, Michigan's largest roller derby league, the Detroit Derby Girls, announced today it will play its 2010-11 season at Cobo Arena to accommodate the league's growing fan base.
"We were bursting at the seams with fans the last two years," stated Detroit Derby Girls' board president, Amy Ruby, who also skates under the name Racer McChaseHer. "We've been fortunate to sell out our home season bouts for the last two seasons, typically 2-3 weeks before each bout. With the move to Cobo, we're pleased to open doors to fans that may have missed out due to an inability to obtain tickets."
Increased interest in roller derby, combined with the high level of competition featured by Detroit Derby Girls in particular, led to quick sell-outs of bouts over its last two seasons. With the move to Cobo, Detroit Derby Girls will be able to accommodate more fans and continue its close relationship with the city of Detroit.
The process of partnering with Olympia Entertainment began last year when the Detroit Derby Girls held their championship bout at Cobo Arena. The event was a success, bringing in over 3,000 attendees.
In addition to increased interest from fans, there's been an increase in women wanting to play the fast-paced, full-contact sport. Fielding its largest new class of skaters to date, the Detroit Derby Girls recently added a fifth home team- the Grand Prix Madonna's. Fans will also find that they get twice the action for their money this season, with each event date consisting of two bouts.
The 2010-11 season-opener will take place on Saturday, Nov. 20 featuring The Motor City Disassembly Line vs the newly-WFTDA Killamazoo Derby Darlins. Following is the rematch of last year's Championship bout featuring The D-Funk All Stars vs The Devil's Night Dames. Doors are at 5 p.m. and the first bout whistle is at 6:30 p.m.
Veteran fan favorites such as Cookie Rumble and Honey Suckit return to the track this season, and several new skaters will debut, such as the aptly Detroit-named Shelby Cobra.
"This rookie class is demonstrating some impressive athletic talent, "states Ruby. "With new skaters, a new venue in Cobo, and double-header bouts, Detroit roller derby can continue to grow and remain an attractive event for people to attend."
