BWW Reviews: CATCH ME IF YOU CAN Catches the Audience By Surprise

Catch Me If You Can really does catch the audience by surprise. The national tour of the musical, currently playing at the Fisher Theatre, is entertaining from start to finish. Based on a true story and a 2002 film of the same title by Steven Spielberg, it tells the tale of Frank Abagnale, Jr., who between the ages of 16 and 21, forged and cashed $2.5 million worth of bad checks in the United States and other countries. The show begins at the end then retells the story of what Frank, Jr. did and the FBI officer who chased him and eventually caught him.

The music of the show is just catchy as there is really no other way to describe it. The orchestra sits on stage and is visible for most of the show and while their music ability is wonderful, it is really the way the actor's sing the lyrics that make it stand out. The opening number of "Live in Living Color" sets the mood perfectly and gets the audience ready for next couple hours of pure entertainment.

Stephen Anthony, who plays Frank Jr., has a fabulous voice and it stands out in the countless numbers he sings. It is a strong, pure voice that reaches ever corner of the theatre, especially during his beautiful solo number of "Goodbye." Anthony is also a great actor and makes it really hard to not give him full attention because of his strong stage presence. He really makes the audience feel for his character.

Merritt David Janes also stands out as the other male lead. He plays FBI Agent Carl Hanratty who is determined to catch Frank Jr. for the crimes he has committed. Janes is a fabulous actor and a great counterpart to Anthony's Frank Jr. because they both work really well together on stage. Janes has a distinct singing voice that really makes his character and sounds great in his solo numbers such as "The Man Inside the Clues." Anthony and Janes also do a great duet, "Strange But True" that concludes the show and really touches the audience.

Catch Me If You Can is just a fun show. It has a talented cast and fantastic music that anyone can enjoy. From start to finish, the entire production catches the audience and entertains them non-stop. It is definitely worth it to catch the show before it leaves Detroit!
