Review: THE BOOK OF MORMON at Fisher Theatre is Laugh Out Loud Funny from the Very First Doorbell Ring!

Hello! Back by popular demand, The Book of Mormon, is here in Detroit at the Fisher Theatre through December 9th for a limited engagement. From the creators of South Park and Avenue Q, it was a night of theatre that they will never forget and made them laugh until they cried. This hilarious musical did not disappoint audiences on its return visit and had them amused from the first doorbell ring to very last one by the talented cast on stage.

Before Hamilton made musical theatre cool and for the masses, there was The Book of Mormon, which swept the world by storm since 2011 when Trey Parker, Robert Lopez, and Matt Stone created it. It was the winner of nine Tony Awards including Best Musical, The New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical, five Drama Desk Awards including Best Musical, four Outer Critics Circle Awards including Best Musical, the Drama League Award for Best Musical, and the 2011 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. The hilarious musical, which has played multiple sold-out engagements here in Detroit, features book, music, and lyrics by Parker, Lopez, and Stone. Parker and Stone are the four-time Emmy-Award winning creators of the landmark animated series, South Park. Tony Award-winner Lopez is the co-creator of the long-running hit musical comedy, Avenue Q.

Essentially, the plot of The Book of Mormon is simple - it is two young, Mormon boys, Elder Price (Robert Colvin) and Elder Cunningham (Conner Peirson), who are sent on a mission to war-torn Uganda and things do not go as they expected. Colvin and Peirson play an exceptional pair on stage as the duo of Elder Price and Elder Cunningham. Their comedic pairing is wonderful to watch and they work so well together as the all-American hero type and nerdy guy type - it is the perfect balance. It is incredible to watch them act, but the pair also have outstanding singing voices. Colvin shines during "I Believe" as does Perison during "Man Up." These two men do a fantastic job of bolstering each other's performance with their lively energy and happiness of being on the stage.

If you are a South Park fan, you are going to love this show. If you are musical theatre fan, you are going to love this show. If you have never been to theatre, but just like comedy, you are going to love this show. The Book of Mormon is a hilarious tale that keeps you laughing, but it also has heart and a message, yet it is nothing like you have ever witnessed on stage before!

There will be a pre-show lottery for The Book of Mormon for $25 tickets. Entries will be accepted at the box office beginning two and half hours prior to each performance; each person will print their name and the number of tickets (1 or 2) they wish to purchase on a card that is provided. Two hours before curtain, names will be drawn at random for a limited number of tickets priced at $25 each. Only one entry per person. Cards are checked for duplication prior to drawing. Winners must be present at time of drawing and show valid ID to purchase tickets. Limit one entry per person and two tickets per winner. Tickets are subject to availability.
