The third annual GPS (Gay Play Series) completed its most successful year last night at Ferndale's Ringwald Theatre. The Audience Award for Best Script this year went to Fanny Packs and Hanky Codes by San Francisco playwright Kristian O'Hare. Fanny Packs and Hanky Codes was directed by Matthew Turner Shelton and featured Shelton, Patrick O'Connor Cronin, Frannie Shepherd-Bates, and Josh Campos. The short play will be featured in a full run with last year's winner A Few Survivors by Jason Sebacher during the upcoming 2012/13 season at The Ringwald.
An Audience Award for Best Actor went to Patrick O'Connor Cronin for his performance in Fanny Packs and Hanky Codes. Best Actress honors went to Genevieve Jona for her turn in Mark Harvey Levine's Ten Picnics, directed by Joe Plambeck. The Best Director award went to Gary Lehman for helming Queer/Trek by Brian Walker.
The Ringwald opened their doors five years ago on May 11, 2007 with Fatal Attraction: A Greek Tragedy. Quickly, The Ringwald became a mainstay of Detroit's theatre community. Past Productions include: Thank You For Being a Friend, The Bad Seed, The Divine Sister, The Book of Liz, Rent, and Love! Valour! Compassion!. The Ringwald was named 2009 and 2012 Best Theatrical Troupe by Real Detroit and Best Place to See Local Theatre in 2010, 2011 and 2012 by the readers of Metro Times.
