The Mosaic Singers will take audiences from the concert hall to the Cotton Club in high style this February! Filled with their signature powerhouse vocal performances, the limited engagement of Singsation! The Mosaic Singers in Concert presented by Pepsi, will run on February 13th and 14th in the Detroit Film Theatre at the DIA.
Singsation! has a little something for everyone. Under the direction of DeLashea Middleton, the Mosaic Singers open the show with the music they are best known for - classical, spiritual, and world music. After intermission, the joint will be jumpin' as the Singers take us to the heart of 1930's Harlem - The Cotton Club. With a live jazz combo and swinging dance moves, the performance will feature jazz standards made famous by
Ella Fitzgerald, Fats Waller,
Billie Holiday and
Benny Goodman, as well as jazz-inspired music from films and Broadway.
The Cotton Club and other famous nightclubs of the Harlem Renaissance featured many of the greatest African American entertainers of the era, but ironically denied admission to people of color. The "Juke Joint" was the place where African Americans danced, socialized, made music and let their hair down. Singsation! will pay tribute to both - including spoken word performance of poetry and prose to highlight the story of this "parallel universe", and celebrate the enduring spirit of these trailblazing artists.
The internationally acclaimed Mosaic Singers have performed in over 25 states, at The White House and The Kennedy Center. Interna tionally, they have represented the United States at the World Festival of Children's Theatre in Copenhagen, Denmark, performed at The Millennium Dome in London, England and participated in cultural exchanges in Dakar, Senegal and Singapore. They have also performed at myriad major local events (the final game at Tiger Stadium, Mayoral and Gubernatorial Inauguration ceremonies, Super Bowl XL festivities) and have been honored to open performances for Sweet Honey in the Rock,
Pete Seeger,
Al Green,
The Temptations and
Maya Angelou.
