The 2009 Tony Award for Best Play went to French playwright Yasmina Rezas black comedy God of Carnage, translated by Christopher Hampton. Two sets of parents meet to discuss their 11-year old sons schoolyard altercation. They sit down over a cocktail to work things out with mature integrity. But the premise of civility begins to melt away as the meeting wears on. Soon the civilized conversation devolves into sensitive topics well beyond the realm of their children. The layers of empathy wear away, social masks slip, tensions emerge, the gloves come off and all four become at odds with each other. Such a situation might be difficult to watchbut its the awkwardness itself that has titillated audiences since 2008. Dark comedy at its best: the writing and acting make you squirm with embarrassing discomfort. The plays director Dennis ODonovan said, The comedy is in the awkwardness. Its the absurdity of it; its the squirminess that is fun. So come strap in for a bumpy ride with God of Carnage. The Tony winning comedy of manners, without the manners starring Lou Larsen, Clelia Patrizio, David Tanner, and Jennifer Trethaway will be on stage at A.C.T. on Sept. 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, 18.
