Seussical, Jr. is a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza written by Tony winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Ragtime, Once On This Island). The two have lovingly brought to life all of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters from a host of the author’s most popular books.
Director Elizabeth Brockwell, who recently directed the sold-out smash hits "You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown" and "Little Shop of Horrors" chose the show because she thought the memorable characters would be perfect for the young cast, which is made up of students from Performing Arts Academy’s popular junior acting company.
"I chose this show because kids need to be reminded sometimes that imagination is one of the greatest gifts we have as human beings. This show is a perfect opportunity for young performers to make these characters come to life the way only a child can.”
Seussica, Jr. captures the spirit of imagination, as colorful characters transport us from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus to the invisible world of the Whos.
The story, narrated in part by the whimsical Cat in the Hat, centers around Horton the Elephant, who finds himself faced with a double challenge. Not only must he protect his tiny friend Jojo and all the invisible Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left to his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird.
Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant in a story that makes you laugh and cry.
