MIAMI DADE COLLEGE NORTH CAMPUS PRESENTS STUDENT PRODUCTION,
"WAITING FOR THE PARADE"
Miami Dade College North Campus theater department presents the
student production of "Waiting for the Parade" being performed Friday and
Saturday April 7th and 8th at the MDC's North Campus, Lehman Theater,
Building 5, 11380 N.W. 27th Avenue, Miami, FL.
"Waiting for the Parade" is a dramatic comedy by John Murrell and
directed by Ellen Davis. The play explores the history, characterizations
and costumes of the 1940's and has relevance to today's societal issues
surrounding war.
In the play, five Calgary women respond very differently to civilian
life during World War II, providing a portrait of Canadian society in
the 1940's. Catherine, whose husband is overseas, copes by working in a
canteen and socializing with another man; Margaret who has one son
overseas and one who joins the communist party, believes that she has lost
both sons; Janet's husband avoids active service by working for the CBC
radio, and she compensates by going overboard in her display of
patriotism and volunteer work. Eve, a young school teacher, tries to keep her
students from enlisting and despises the militaristic posturing of her
much older husband. Finally, Marta is a German immigrant whose father
is a spy.
The dynamics and tensions between the women are a reflection of the
war itself, how the pressure of such extraordinary circumstances reveals
character – how some thrive and some recoil, how some find laughter and
others only worry.
