Child prodigy, U.N. Peace Ambassador, and educator-violinist Midori could equally be described as any of these. This superstar violinist began her career at age 11 with the New York Philharmonic and continues to astound audiences today with her virtuosic playing. Midori, with pianist Robert McDonald, will perform a recital on the Bach Festival Society's Visiting Artists Series Friday, April 17 at 8 p.m. in Tiedtke Concert Hall on the Rollins College Campus. Midori's program with the Bach Festival Society will feature a variety of works ranging from traditional to modern, including works by Schumann, Beethoven, Cage, and Enescu.

Midori's reputation for excellence goes beyond the concert stage. In addition to her performances, she is a U.N Peace Ambassador and Chair of the Strings Department at the University of Southern California's Thorton School of Music. Midori is the founder of three nonprofit organizations that focus on arts education and bringing classical music performances to small and underserved communities. Robert McDonald is an award-winning pianist who has performed internationally both as a soloist and as an accompanist with other celebrated musicians. He is currently on the faculty of the Juilliard School in New York.

The Bach Festival Society is partnering with the Orlando Museum of Art to bring audiences a new understanding of conceptual art with a jointly sponsored lecture, Sunday, April 5 at 2 p.m. titled "Provocative Pairings in Art and Music." Composer John Cage proposed that the primary act of a musical performance was not making music but listening, and composed scores using chance procedures and alternative instruments. Midori will be performing his piece Six Melodies on her recital with the Bach Festival Society. Therman Statom is a glass installation artist who uses a nontraditional art medium and then takes it off the wall, encouraging the viewer to walk into it. Jan Clanton, associate curator of adult programs at the Orlando Museum of Art, will lead a thought-provoking discussion about conceptualism in art and music that concludes with a gallery walk of Therman Statom: Stories from the New World.
