FST's 2007 Stage III Season Challenges with Themes of Violence, Identity and Sex
Florida Studio Theatre's Stage III Season is ready to start in January for another series of three challenging plays that take audiences to the edge. This year the plays run the gambit of emotions and theatrical styles bringing audiences a well-balanced theatrical experience.
Kicking off the 2007 season is the regional premiere of Martin McDonagh's recent Broadway smash hit, The Lieutenant of Inishmore.
Winner of London's Olivier Award for best comedy and nominated for five Tony Awards (including best play), Inishmore is another dark comedy by young Irish Playwright Martin McDonagh (The Pillowman, The Lonesome West, The Beauty Queen of Leenane). This play takes place (as the name suggests) on the quiet island of Inishmore. It presents the shockingly funny tale of Padraic, a ruthless Irish Liberation Army Enforcer and the one thing he loves more than anything else in the world…his little black cat, Wee Thomas.
When Wee Thomas is mysteriously murdered, blood begins to fly (think Quentin Tarantino meets Monty Python). Audiences up for the gore will see an impressive spectacle of comedy presented by eight unintelligent characters doing the best they can think of to survive. The New York Times calls it "a severely moral play, translating into dizzy absurdism the self-perpetuating spirals of political violence that now occur throughout the world."
The Lieutenant of Inishmore begins January 24 and runs through February 16 , 2007. Warning: This play contains adult language and on-stage violence.
Carlyle Brown's The Fula From America questions the balance of heritage and identity and will be the second play presented in the 2007 Stage III Season. The play is literally the real-life story of the playwright's trip to Africa in the 1980's in search of his own African Identity. What he encountered was anything but what he expected.
In this one-man play, Brown journeys throughout West Africa. He delves deep into the bush and explores the corridors of the African elite. He is thrust into the pains of poverty and uplifted by incredible generosity. He travels through a strikingly foreign landscape and culture that is Africa in the 1980's and ultimately explores the boundary of the African-America hyphen. The Fula From America is an insightful and comedic drama of homecoming and cultural exploration.
The Fula From America begins February 28 and runs through March 23, 2007.
FST ends this year's Stage III Season with the regional premiere of a lofty restoration comedy with some outrageously funny modern twists. David Grimm's Measure for Pleasure has all the ingredients of a beautiful 18th Century comedy. Fancy costumes, speeches in verse and mistaken identities abound. Only this new play has an unmistakably modern sensibility.
Lust runs amok in this sinfully funny comedy. Gentlemen, ladies and rogues devise cunning plans (for sex), concoct secret identities (for sex) and partake in daring duels (for sex). In spite of the inappropriate intentions and over-the-top antics, the story ends in true love. Measure for Pleasure is a naughty contemporary comedy dressed up in 18th Century style.
Measure for Pleasure begins April 25 and runs through May 18, 2006. Warning: This play contains explicit sexual situations and adult language.
All three shows in the Stage III Season – The Lieutenant of Inishmore, The Fula From America and Measure for Pleasure – will be presented at FST's Gompertz Theatre. Single tickets range from $19 for previews to $29-32 for regular performances. A subscription to all 3 shows ranges from $39-52.
