Square Peg Productions is a new theatre group dedicated to producing alternative theatre that does not fit neatly into round holes. Those turned away in October from the sold-out run of its first production, Three Angels Dancing On a Needle are in luck. The show returns tonight.

In Three Angels Dancing on a Needle, three characters play out absurd fantasies of sex and revenge as they look for paradise in all the wrong places. The piece makes outrageous comedy out of a collision of the spiritual and the sexual.

Playwright Assurbanipal Babilla looks at American culture from a Middle Eastern perspective. Once a celebrated well-known playwright/director /painter/ sculptor in Iran, he fled his country in 1979 after his series of erotic nude self-portraits were put on
trial, banned, and subsequently burned during Khomeini's regime. (You read correctly, it was the paintings themselves that were tried).

Last year Babilla was awarded a Hellman/Hammett grant in recognition of his courage in the face of political persecution. Since coming to America, Babilla plays (with such titles as Eating the Audience, Something Something Uber Alles, The Sisters Karamazov, and Born Again Killer) have been seen in New York at La MaMa, P.S. 122 and The Vineyard.

Three Angels has been performed across the U.S, and in Europe. Square Peg's production is its Southeastern premiere. Square Peg has been invited to bring Three Angels to New York City's Brick Theater for a run in summer 2007.

The show will begin with a short curtain-raiser, Nerves, an original movement/theatre piece inspired by playwright Charles Mee that compresses a lifetime of bad dates into fifteen minutes. This piece was developed and created by the Square Peg company.

Both pieces will be performed by Miriam Kulick, Merry Jo Pitasi, and Odell Rivas under the direction of Michael Yawney.
