John Huston directed the African Queen, a 1952 Academy Award-winning film based off the book by C.S. Forester. The African Queen is the name of a boat that Charlie Allnut, played by Bogart, captains in Africa during WWI. The plot thickens when a missionary, played by Katharine Hepburn, persuades the captain to use his boat to attack an enemy warship. 105 minutes long (1 hour and 45 minutes), this classic is filled with romance, danger, and excitement.
The Maltese Falcon, also directed by John Huston in 1941, is recognized by the Panorama du Film Noir Americain as the first film-noir. Ripe with mystery and crime, the story follows private investigator Sam Spade, played by Bogart, as he takes a case that involves him with three eccentric criminals, a drop-dead gorgeous liar, and their search for a priceless statuette. Also starring Peter Lorre, Sydney Greenstreet, and Mary Astor, the movie is 101 minutes long (1 hour and 41 minutes) and was nominated for an impressive 3 Academy Awards, including Best Picture. This film truly is "the stuff dreams are made of".
In an ongoing effort to attract visitors and promote business activities within its service area, the City of Stuart Community Redevelopment Agency is pleased to partner with the Lyric Theatre in the sponsoring these free movies for the entire community.
