The Lyric Theatre will present Haochen Zhang February 7th, 13th Van Cliburn Competition Gold Medalist - Haochen Zhang
Once every four years, a select few young pianists emerge victorious from the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, hailed as "the most prestigious classical piano contest in the world." (Chicago Tribune) We are pleased to welcome one of this year's gold medal winners, and the 2009 Competition's youngest participant, Haochen Zhang.
Zhang's performance of the Prokofiev Second Concerto at the Competition won accolades such as this one from Scott Cantrell of The Dallas Morning News: "Zhang impressed with depth of musical understanding and subtle expressive nuance . . . at the competition's end, he was the musician I'd walk across town to hear."
Zhang gave his debut recital at the Shanghai Music Hall at the age of five, performing Bach's two-part inventions, as well as sonatas by Haydn and Mozart. He moved to the United States at fifteen to attend the Curtis Institute of Music. First-prize winner of the 2007 China International Piano Competition, Zhang has performed throughout Asia, Europe and the United States with leading orchestras, including the China National Symphony Orchestra, the Krakow State Philharmonic, the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, The Philadelphia Orchestra and the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra.
Says Cantrell: "Zhang . . . demonstrated a musical maturity almost unimaginable in one so young." We invite you to experience the amazing gifts of this young virtuoso in his special solo performance at the Lyric.
