THE UM Jerry Herman RING THEATRE

SPOTLIGHTS THE TIMELESS BATTLE OF THE SEXES WITH COMEDIES ‘BIG LOVE' AND ‘LYSISTRATA'

The age-old "Battle of the Sexes" comes to Coral Gables this February with two comedies by the University of Miami Jerry Herman Ring Theatre. Running in alternating performances from February 16 - 27, 2011, Lysistrata and Big Love are two boisterous comedies inspired by classic Greek theatre but spiced with enough contemporary flavors to tickle the taste buds of any audience.

In Lysistrata, Ancient Greece is the 21st year of its war with Sparta. There seems to be very little prospect of peace. The weary women of Athens, enflamed by Lysistrata, shock their warrior husbands by declaring that there will be no more lovemaking until the war ends. Aristophanes' 2,000-year-old play is just as bawdy, hilarious and relevant today as it was when it first played the massive amphitheatres of Greece's Golden Age.

Big Love by contemporary writer Charles Mee, is based on the Greek drama, The Suppliant Women. But Mee seizes this classis plot by the throat, updates it with a comic paintbrush and spins an explosively theatrical and shocking experience by transporting the story to modern times. Centering on a group of rebellious brides fleeing arranged marriages, the comedy opens with the brides' arrival at a luxurious Italian villa. In hot pursuit come their jilted grooms. What follows is a literal battle of the sexes that is both outrageously funny and visually stunning

Because of their content and language, both comedies are recommended for mature audiences.

Individual tickets are $16 for weeknights and matinees. Friday and Saturday nights are $18. There are discounts for seniors, students and UM faculty, staff and alumni.

The theatre is offering a special "Battle of the Sexes Two-for-the-Price-of-One Discount" for couples, regardless of gender, who buy tickets to both shows.
