On Sunday, May 23rd, the Athens Theatre (124 N. Florida Ave., DeLand) is presenting the award-winning film, Division Street. Doors open at 6 p.m. and admission is free. Trailer for the film can be seen at http://www.divisionstreetmovie.com/.

The movie highlights how roadways fragment wildlife habitats and may even challenge the survival of some species. A significant part of the film focuses on Florida's Black Bear and Panther populations and how they are affected by human traffic.

Director Eric Bendick will attend and participate in a panel discussion following the film. Audience members will be able to ask questions about transportation and wildlife issues. The panel will include professors from the University of Central Florida and Stetson University, staff from Florida state agencies, private-land stewards and representatives from nonprofits.

Government officials, planners and concerned citizens have been extended a special invitation to attend. The Athens Theatre, along with sponsors Alshouse and Associates and The Beacon Newspaper are committed to supporting local projects and organizations that are working to protect and improve our community. The organizers and the sponsors have planned the event to be primarily an educational experience.
