Seeking the Self: The Art of Jonathan Green
A four-day festival to be held in various locations throughout
Broward County, October 17 - 21, 2008
The Cultural Foundation of Broward invites members of the community to a unique art festival. Seeking the Self: The Art of Jonathan Green, to be held in various locations throughout Broward County over a four-day period, is a multidisciplinary festival of dance, music, poetry, visual arts, education and documentary film, and will take place October 17 - 21, 2008. It is the fifth of its kind in the United States.
Green's work is represented in numerous private and public collections including The Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach Fla.; Naples Museum of Art, Naples, Fla.; the Morris Museum of Art, Augusta, GA; the Gibbes Museum of Art, Charleston, S.C.; and the McKissick Museum of the University of South Carolina, in Columbia, S.C.
Born in Gardens Corner, South Carolina, Jonathan Green graduated from Beaufort High School and served in the United States Air Force as an illustrator before enrolling as a textile design student at the East Grand Forks Technical Institute in Minnesota. In 1978 he began his formal study of drawing and painting at The School of the Art Institute in Chicago, IL earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1982, and then pursued independent study abroad to supplement his formal education. While traveling and visiting museums, Green realized that "the best artists are those who create from what they know best." It took a trip to Switzerland and Mexico to return him to Gardens Corner and begin his body of work ‘Gullah Life reflections.'
Best known for depicting the people and landscapes of the South Carolina Lowcountry, Green's art draws on his memories of the Gullah traditions and the tales and stories told by members of his extended family and friends. The publication in 1996 of "Gullah Images: The Art of Jonathan Green" by the University of South Carolina Press, now in its third printing, brought the artist's work to a wider and more diverse audience. In 1996 he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts by the University of South Carolina.
This event will be celebrated by a wide array of arts organizations in various festivities, including A Meet and Greet at the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society (Oct. 17); a screening of the Documentary Seeking at the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale, Nova Southeastern University with Fort Lauderdale Film Festival (Oct. 18); a dance performance by Jubilee Dance Theater at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center (Oct. 19); Art Student Seminars at Dillard Center for the Arts (Oct. 20); and a Composition based on Green's work at the Symphony of the Americas on (Oct. 21); to name a few.
