Tartuffe, The Imposter
By Molière
Directed by Leroy Clark
FIU Theatre will present Molière's classic farce, TARTUFFE THE IMPOSTER in a fresh (and non-rhyming) translation by Christopher Hampton .
THE STORY: In seventeenth century Paris, during the reign of Louis the XIV (the Sun King), a wealthy and gullible Parisian named Orgon has a beautiful (and much younger) second wife and two grown children from his previous marriage. Orgon becomes mesmerized by Tartuffe, a religious faker, who worms his way into Orgon's house, affections and good graces with nothing but the most sinister of intentions. Orgon's family is driven to distraction by his blind devotion to Tartuffe. Their increasingly desperate attempts to unmask the crafty hypocrite in Orgon's eyes drive the play to a wild and dangerous climax.
Originally written and performed before the King in 1664, TARTUFFE THE IMPOSTER was deemed so controversial that the King did not allow it to be licensed for public performance for five long years and many clerics demanded that the author be burned at the stake as a heretic. Since its official first public performance on February 5, 1669 , it has received thousands of productions worldwide and has become one of the most popular plays of all time.
