On Monday, November 7th, top musical artists Tip "T.I." Harris, Rick Ross, Gucci Mane, Pusha T, and Jay Electronica will join social justice activists such as Sybrina Fulton and Jahvaris Fulton, the mother and brother of Trayvon Martin, to gather at Florida Memorial University in Miami for the 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East "YOUNG GETS IT DONE" rally for millennials. In an effort to mobilize African-American, Latino, and Haitian/Caribbean young people between 18 and 34, the free and open-to-the-public rally will bring together 5,000 voters in Miami, combatting the misconception that millennials are increasingly out of touch with modern politics.
Additional special guests and performers include: Rotimi; Bre-Z; YesJulz, 070 Shake; DJ Stevie J; Marcos "Kosine" Palacios; Umi Selah, Dream Defenders;
Stephen Green, NAACP Youth and
College Division National Director; Aja Monet, Afro-Cuban poet and activist; Carmen Berkley, Director of the Civil, Human & Women's Rights AFL-CIO; and Aaron Mair, President, Sierra Club.
"There has never been a more important time to activate young people to take action on behalf of the issues that will define their generation-equality, justice and democracy," said
George Gresham, President of 1199SEIU. "These values have always been at the core of the work that we do and we are honored to be working with such incredible partners and talent to address voter turnout amongst the youth and people of color through innovative ways, get out the vote on November 8th, and continue our fight for fairness across the country."
As the largest healthcare union in the nation, 1199SEIU represents nurses, homecare workers and other healthcare professionals with the mission of advocating for quality care and good jobs for all. Since 1932, healthcare workers have also been on the front lines in the fight for social justice.
"We are grateful for 1199's commitment to motivating young voters, especially those from communities of color, whose engagement in swing states will likely determine the election," said Marvin Bing Founder of Art School DropOut and Producer of YOUNG GETS IT DONE. "The stakes are high for millennials this election-their votes will affect issues ranging minimum wage, to LGBTQ rights, to the war on drugs, to police brutality, immigration, and criminal justice reform."
