The Studio@620 will produce the world premiere of Sharon Scott's new musical, MAHALIA, JUST AS I AM, running Oct. 16 thru October 25, with a preview Oct. 15.
MAHALIA, JUST AS I AM is local acting legend Sharon Scott's new musical about the life and times of preeminent gospel singer Mahalia Jackson. Widely regarded as the greatest gospel singer of all time and one of the most powerful voices ever, Jackson was the first performing artist in history to receive a Grammy Award for Gospel Music. This inspiring musical follows Jackson's rise to fame while dealing with her struggles in the segregated South of the early 20th century. Staring Scott in the title role, MAHALIA, JUST AS I AM is filled with several of Jackson's hits, including "Take My Hand, Precious Lord," "Move Up a Little Higher" and "He Knows My Heart".
Originally workshopped at the Studio@620 last April, the musical's director, Bob Devin Jones, is excited about the growth of MAHALIA, JUST AS I AM over the past six months.
"MAHALIA, JUST AS I AM was very strong when Sharon first presented it to me and just improved after we got feedback from audiences during the workshopping process last spring. I have no doubts that this musical will go places in the future, and I am very excited to let local audiences get the first experience with this great play."
