Lake Worth Playhouse Presents The Funny and Heart-Warming 'Steel Magnolias.'

The Lake Worth Playhouse continues its 58th season with Robert Harling's bittersweet comedy, STEEL MAGNOLIAS. The production takes place November 19 - December 5, 2010 on the stage of the Lake Worth Playhouse located at 713 Lake Avenue in downtown Lake Worth.

In a beauty parlor in small-town Chinquapin, Louisiana, six very different women come together to share their secrets and bare their souls, throwing in a little neighborly gossip for good measure. Based on playwright Robert Harling's own experiences with his mother and sister, STEEL MAGNOLIAS is packed with hilarious Southern repartee ("If you can't find anything good to say about anybody, come sit by me"), woven throughout this heart-warming story of friendship among a close-knit group of women who are "fragile as flowers, strong as steel."

The 1987 play became an Off-Broadway hit and exploded onto the regional theatre scene before Harling was asked to adapt the hilarious and heart-warming story to a screenplay. STEEL MAGNOLIAS became a Hollywood blockbuster in 1989.

Robert Harling is an American writer and film director who was born in Louisiana in 1951. In his early career, Harling set out on a path as an aspiring actor when the death of his younger sister inspired him to write the play, STEEL MAGNOLIAS, which remains his most famous work to date. He went on to adapt the screenplay for the film version of the play, which was produced in 1989 and starred Shirley McLaine, Dolly Parton, Sally Field and Julia Roberts. Harling played a small role in the film as a minister. In subsequent years, Harling concentrated on working as a screenwriter. He is the author of the screenplays to the films SOAPDISH (1991), THE FIRST WIVES CLUB (1996) and LAWS OF ATTRACTION (2004). He also wrote and directed THE EVENING STAR (1996), the sequel to TERMS OF ENDEARMENT. He is currently in the process of writing a "dramedy" for network television entitled DALLAS.

The Playhouse production of STEEL MAGNOLIAS is directed by Wendy Haley, director of the highly acclaimed 2009 Playhouse production of ALWAYS, PATSY CLINE. The six-member cast of STEEL MAGNOLIAS includes: Patricia Storch-Goodrich (The Crucible, 2009) as M'Lynn, Megan Pollak (The Mousetrap, 2010) as Annelle, Lori Sternberg as Truvy, Joanne Paciello as Clairee, Elizabeth King as Shelby and Pam Syx as Ouiser. The set is designed by award-winning designer, Richard Green, who is known for his spectacular sets for last season's BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS and THE MOUSETRAP.
