Expect to be impressed when UF's premiere co-ed a cappella group takes to the stage Sunday, March 28 at the Squitieri Studio Theatre. This student-run group will dazzle audiences with their award-winning talent and dedication to their music.
Over the past 25 years, college a cappella has become a huge hit, with more than 1,200 college groups nationwide and 200,000 alumni. Once merely considered a destination for choir geeks, collegiate a cappella has achieved an aura of glamour, moving from college campuses to bigger (and more varied) stages. University of Florida's very own No Southern Accent is part of that starry-eyed and often quirky subculture of campus a cappella.
Formed in 2001, the competitive co-ed group No Southern Accent (NSA) has been an active part of the University of Florida and Gainesville community, performing at events such as Children's Miracle Network's Dance Marathon, Relay for Life and various UF sporting events.
NSA is nationally ranked and has received numerous accolades since establishing itself as a competitive a cappella ensemble. In 2008 No Southern Accent ranked second overall in the quarterfinal round of the annual International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) and moved on to the semifinal round of ICCA, where the group received the award for Outstanding Choreography. In 2009 the group was recognized at the same competition for its Outstanding Vocal Percussion and Outstanding Arrangement. And in 2010, performing a ground-breaking set by indie rock artists the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, No Southern Accent was awarded Outstanding Vocal Percussion and Outstanding Soloist, advancing yet again to the semifinal round of ICCA. NSA has also competed and attended SoJam, the fastest-growing a cappella conference and competition in the Southeast, where the group has worked with some of the top musical arrangers and vocal clinicians in the country.
Though the vocalists come from different musical backgrounds, majors and future career paths, the members share the ultimate love of performing. With an extensive repertoire that covers classic standards and radio hits, alike, any audience will enjoy NSA's musical escapades.
