GableStage at the Biltmore presents the Southeastern Premiere of Shining City by Conor McPherson---opening June 21st and running thru July 20th

McPherson's plays include Rum & Vodka, The Good Thief, This Lime Tree Bower, St. Nicholas, The Weir (Olivier Award, Best Play,) Dublin Carol, Port Authority, and The Seafarer (Tony Award nomination, Best Play.)   Shining City received critical acclaim in London and New York and was awarded a Tony Nomination for Best Play. Richly drawn characters and powerful storytelling weave a tale of love, loss and faith.

Shining City is anchored in the real world; yet beneath the everyday business meetings and fumbling adulteries lurks a powerful sense of loneliness.  In Dublin, a man seeks help from a counselor after his wife's death. What begins as an unusual encounter becomes a struggle between the living and dead—which will shape and define both men for the rest of their lives.  McPherson reconciles the mundane and the metaphysical, while exploring issues of guilt, the wreckage of the past and the possibility of making a fresh start in life.

Originally produced on April 20, 2006, in New York City, it was presented by the Manhattan Theatre Club at the Biltmore Theatre.  Here in South Florida it will be directed by GableStage's Producing Artistic Director, Joseph Adler. The cast is comprised of John Bixler, Deborah L. Sherman, Ricky Waugh and Gregg Weiner.

Ben Brantley, theatre critic for the New York Times, called the play, "As close to perfection as contemporary playwriting gets!"  The London Telegraph called it "Moving, compassionate, ingenious and absolutely gripping!  Scenes that provoke great gales of laughter, others that send a shiver of fear down the spine!"
