The Southeastern Premiere of

THE ACCOMPLICES

a play by

Bernard Weinraub

with (in alphabetical order)

Ursula Cataan, Howard Elfman, Scott Genn, Joel Kolker, Wayne LeGette,

John Manzelli, Jessica K. Peterson, Kevin Reilly and Gregg Weiner

Directed by Joseph Adler

Longtime journalist (New York Times) and playwright Bernard Weinraub dramatizes how the American government, media, and even American Jewish officials, fearing a backlash of anti-Semitism at home, failed to act decisively enough to stop the World War II massacre of European Jews. This sorry period of apology for American inaction is now the subject of this morality thriller about grassroots activism and back-room politics in the deepening shadow of Nazi genocide. It is a bracing reminder of the complicity of silence with mass-murder.

Among the many real-life characters depicted are Peter H. Bergson (a Zionist emissary in the United States, born Hillel Kook,) prominent Reform Rabbi Stephen Wise, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Henry Morgenthau, Jr. (FDR's Secretary of the Treasury,) Breckenridge Long (FDR's obstructionist immigration overseer) and Hollywood screenwriter Ben Hecht.

"A story that needs to be told!  As timely now as ever!"

Time Out New York

"Unfailingly slams across Weinraub's message that not only can it happen here, it did." –TheaterMania

The play received its World Premiere on March 20, 2007, where it was presented by The New Group at off-Broadway's Acorn Theatre, Theatre Row.
