Slow Burn Theatre Company's 2015-16 Season to Feature BIG FISH, VIOLET & More

South Florida's acclaimed Slow Burn Theatre Company has announced its upcoming 2015-16 season, featuring four contemporary musicals that will be presented exclusively at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

"We are very excited to welcome Slow Burn Theatre as one of our partners in the arts," said Broward Center President and CEO Kelley Shanley. "After working with co-founders Patrick Fitzwater and Matthew Korinko on our new Abdo New River Room Theater Series, we knew we wanted to extend that collaboration with this award-winning company."

The landmark season features two of the most-talked-about shows of the recent New York theatrical season: the Broadway musical Big Fish and Off-Broadway's Heathers: The Musical. The season also includes the first locally produced professional production of the Tony Award-winning Spring Awakening as well as the Drama Critics' Circle and Lucille Lortel Award-winning Violet, which was recently revived on Broadway.

"Theater audiences have come to expect the best at the Broward Center and we have put together a tremendous season to unveil in what will be the newly updated Amaturo Theater," said Korinko, who also serves as executive director of the company. "This season is designed as a thank you to our faithful audiences and a spectacular introduction to those seeing our work for the first time."

The season begins October 22 - November 8, 2015 with Big Fish, based on the celebrated novel by Daniel Wallace and the acclaimed film directed by Tim Burton with music and lyrics by Tony nominee Andrew Lippa. In the musical, a traveling salesman, who lives life to its fullest, thrills those around him with his incredible, larger-than-life stories. His son, who is ready to become a father himself, is determined to find the truth behind his father's epic tales. Overflowing with heart and humor, Big Fish swims deftly between two worlds: the lush, vibrant world of the father's fantasies and the subtler world of his son's reality. Variety raved, "A show for everyone who loves musicals. Don't dare miss this!"

Violet continues the season January 21- February 7, 2016. The musical tells the powerful story of a young woman accidentally scarred by her father. In hopes that a TV evangelist can cure her, she embarks on a cross country bus trip to find him. Along the way, she meets a young black soldier who teaches her about beauty, love, courage and what it means to be an outsider. The musical features a show-stopping score that soars with American-roots, folk and gospel anthems from one of the most vibrant composers of modern musical theater, Jeanine Tesori (Caroline Or Change, Thoroughly Modern Millie and Shrek).

Slow Burn Theatre proudly presents the first locally-produced professional production of Spring Awakening March 17 - April 3, 2016. The winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, this rock musical adaptation of the seminal play explores the poignant journey of a group of German students in the 19th century as they move from adolescence to adulthood. With music by Duncan Sheik and a book and lyrics by Steven Sater, Spring Awakening is an electrifying fusion of morality, sexuality, passion and rock and roll with "the most gorgeous Broadway score this decade," according to Entertainment Weekly.

The season culminates with the South Florida premiere of Heathers: The Musical June 9 - 26, 2016. Brought to you by the award-winning creative team of Kevin Murphy (Reefer Madness, Desperate Housewives), Laurence O'Keefe (Bat Boy, Legally Blonde) and Andy Fickman (Reefer Madness, She's the Man), this hilarious, heartfelt and homicidal musical is based on the 1989 film, and features a brainy, beautiful teenage misfit who hustles her way into the most powerful and ruthless clique in high school where she falls in love with the dangerously sexy new boy in school. With its moving love story and laugh-out-loud comedy, the musical takes an unflinching look at the joys and anguish of high school. The New York Post applauded, "Ingenious, naughty and very funny. Heathers still cliques."

Each production will run for three weeks with performances Thursdays through Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. The Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center will undergo renovations which will include new seats and enhancements to lighting and sound before the new season begins.

Tickets will be offered on a full four-show subscription for $150 or a three-show flexible subscription for $115. Tickets will go on sale to current Slow Burn Theatre subscribers and Broward Center Entourage members on January 23. New subscriptions will be available on January 31 and tickets to individual shows, priced at $45, go on sale February 13.
