Next week, Dreyfoos School of the Arts, an Arts Magnet High School in West Palm Beach, will open one of their biggest musicals to date. Both Performance and Technical Theatre majors have been working diligently to provide a larger-than-life, major musical production containing all of the elements the audience will expect in Shrek: The Musical: high-energy dance numbers, soulful vocals, a poignant love story, memorable tunes, and a grand spectacle of scenic pictures. While these are necessary components of a successful show, what truly drives this story is its message of love and acceptance. In a blatantly divisive world where we are constantly pressured to choose sides, Shrek's journey is one of discovery that culminates in creating an inclusive and supportive atmosphere. Throughout this show, both audience and cast of characters learn the value of opening up one's own perspective and, rather than focus on our differences, find similarities and common ground amongst each other. With direction and choreography by DSOA's musical theatre faculty member Michelle Petrucci, musical direction by Dominic Raffa, set design by Michael McClain, puppets created by Jeremy Thorpe of Universal Studios and projection animation by DSOA's visual arts department, this version of Shrek is not to be missed!
