Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks is a comedy about Lily Harrison (Phyllis Spear), who hires Michael Minetti (Larry Buzzeo) for private lessons in Tango, Swing, Modern, Foxtrot and Cha-Cha. Over the course of six weeks, this odd couple transforms their acrimony into a dance of intimacy as they learn to overcome their differences and create a poignant connection to each other.
At its core, the play is about two very different people who learn to comfort each other as they share their deepest secrets and pain. Alfieri’s writing is sparkling, witty, touching and laugh out loud - all performed against a panorama of ageism and bigotry.
Since its Los Angeles premiere and Broadway opening, Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks has been translated into 12 languages and has traversed the globe with productions in over 20 countries. With over 50 productions and two national tours in Germany alone, the play has established itself as an international hit and one of the most produced plays in the world.
Phyllis Spear has performed at numerous theatres throughout South Florida, including several productions at the Broward Stage Door, where she recently starred in Prisoner of Second Avenue and Crossing Delancey, for which she was nominated for best featured actress in a play in 2011.
Actor Larry Buzzeo originally starred in a St. Petersburg, Florida production of Six Dance Lessons, where he worked closely with the playwright, Richard Alfieri. He has been a stage actor for 20 years, fleshing out characters from Full Monte, La Cage au Folles, to Rocky Horror Picture Show on stages from NYC to Miami.
Award-winning director/actor Dan Kelley, a fixture on the local theater scene for 27 years, directs Six Dance Lessons. He is often recognized from his appearance on the pilot of Burn Notice and is a regular on the HGTV series My House is Worth What? Dan has been nominated for a Carbonell Award six times as both director and actor in musicals. Last year he received The Silver Palm Award, The Curtain Up Award, and The Anthony Award. Six Dance Lessons reunites him with Phyllis Spear, whom he directed in previous productions at the Broward Stage Door Theatre.
