Still glowing from the success of its recent production of Nilo Cruz' adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez "A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings," Artistic Director Stephanie Ansin announces The PlayGround Theatre will launch its 5-production 2007-08 season with audience favorite, "The Love of Three Oranges," Thursday, September 20, at The PlayGround Theatre, 9806 N.E. 2nd Avenue, Miami Shores. Also set are the return of the perennial treat, "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" to be performed prior to, during and following the holiday season; the aforementioned "A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings"; a production of Sarah Ruhl's "The Clean House," and what is anticipated to be the major highlight of the season, a contemporary version of the Lewis Carroll classic, "Alice in Wonderland."
Directed and adapted by Ansin whose vision as illustrated with her production of "Wings" is to embrace young audiences with exciting and interactive theater, this 'new' "Alice" will have all the elements of the original but with a heightened view to embracing children's love of contemporary music. As such, kids and their parents can expect a happy mix of hip hop and salsa to cheer them on as Alice dances though wonderland. Equally interesting should be Ansin's direction of Sarah Ruhl's "The Clean House," which will be addressing The PlayGround's mission to increase its community presence as a vibrant institution presenting plays for adults as well as children.
Performed in several theaters across the country, including the Yale Repertory Theatre where it gained its acclaimed reputation as finalist for the 2005 Pulitzer Prize, "The Clean House" was equally embraced by critics and audiences at New York's Lincoln Center and locally last season at Boca Raton's Caldwell Theatre. Fresh and insightful, "The Clean House" is an extraordinary, witty, warm-hearted, and deeply moving comedy that explores the uplifting premise that despite the disappointments that color our lives, a good laugh can turn out to be a major cure-all for many of its ailments. Playwright Ruhl's "Eurydice" was recently presented at Off-Broadway's Second Stage Theater.
Rounding out the season will be Hans Christian Andersen's magical fairy tale "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" for children 3 years and up; Count Carlo Gozzi's "The Love of Three Oranges" for ages 6 and up; and Pulitzer Prize winner Nilo Cruz' adaptation of Nobel Prize winner Gabriel García Márquez' story of faith and imagination, "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings," for ages 8 and up.
Throughout the year, productions will be traveling a circuit that includes The PlayGround Theatre at Miami Shores, 9806 N.E. 2nd Avenue, Miami Shores; the Colony Theatre, 1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach; the Amaturo Theater at Ft. Lauderdale's Broward Center, 201 SW 5th Avenue. Ft. Lauderdale; and the Rinker Playhouse, at the Kravis Center, 701 Okeechobee Blvd., West Palm Beach.
Tickets are $15 each; $10 each for groups of 20 or more; $5 when purchased by students through Culture Shock. Free tickets are available for schools and community groups.
