Back with Asolo Repertory Theatre for a second World Premiere production, critically acclaimed playwright Jason Wells tackles controversy and political intrigue with his new play Perfect Mendacity, opening in Sarasota on May 15, 2009. Michael Donald Edwards directs this riveting production which explores the fertile ground of current events, and like Wells' Men of Tortuga, examines the issues we face as individuals and as citizens of today's world. It asks tough questions about lies and why we tell them. Yet, the playwright says that the one thing he wants audiences to leave with is a sense of-"Wow, that was incredibly entertaining."
"One of the subjects that intrigued me was the subject of lie detectors and the assumption that they are infallible. But the more I looked at it, the more contradictions I uncovered. It became worth exploring whether we as people can lie so completely that we lie to ourselves. Can lies be told so well that even the liars can deceive themselves?" -Jason Wells, playwright
"Jason delights in entwining the personal and the political, often compelling his characters into situations that illustrate how closely these two forces are linked. This is a play that tackles the thorny issues of morality, justice, and human nature. It ultimately asks The Audience to decide if honesty is always the best policy." -Michael Donald Edwards
The cast features David Breitbarth, Douglas Jones, Diana Simonzadeh, Jason Peck and DeMario McGrew; with scenic design by Jeffrey W. Dean, costumes by June ElisaBeth Taylor, lighting design by Aaron Muhl, sound design by Kevin Kennedy and stage management by MarIan Wallace.
