Florida Studio Theatre Takes a Walk On the Funny Side With
The Flip Side: Paranoia on Parade

Florida Studio Theatre winds up its 2005-2006 Winter Cabaret show with a world premiere revue, The Flip Side.  Beginning March 28, The Flip Side is an evening dedicated to the comic insights of some of today's off-the-wall (and not so off-the-wall) songwriters.  The show runs through June 10, 2006 in FST's Goldstein Cabaret.

"You can go crazy with some of the wonderful stuff there is in life," Shel Silverstein once said and The Flip Side proves just how apropos that statement is.  Featuring songs from a wild array of artists - including Shel Silverstein, Randy Newman, Ray Stevens and John Forster - The Flip Side is a seriously funny revue that relies heavily on musical wordplay and lyrical lunacy.  The songs featured in the show are sardonic, ironic and, at times, histrionic.  Witty tunes full of moronic characters paired with sophisticated lyrics reveal the present state of America: the good, the bad and the funny.

Stephen Hope, who appeared most recently in FST's production of My Way will return to join the cast of The Flip Side.  Mr. Hope's other FST credits include Ruthless! The Musical, The Exonerated, The Rise and Fall of Western Civilization According to Tom Lehrer, and others.  Joining Mr. Hope is fellow FST returnee Richie McCall.  Mr. McCall appeared in last season's Mainstage opener, It Ain't Nothin' But the Blues, and has lent his talents to other FST productions including The All Night Strut, My One and Only Gershwin and A Vaudeville Cabaret.  Rounding out the cast will be FST newcomer Craig Laurie, who is coming to FST straight from a run in New York's Forbidden Broadway: Special Victims Unit.

Dennis Courtney, who directed this season's Ethel Waters: His Eye is on the Sparrow and Piano Men, will direct The Flip Side.  He will be aided by FST staffers Michael Sebastian (Music Director) and Marcella Beckwith (Scenic and Costume Design).  Guest artist Jeff Dillon will design the lights.
The Flip Side begins March 28, 2006 and runs through June 10, 2006 at the Goldstein Cabaret.   Tickets are $26-29 and may be purchased from the FST Box Office in person or by calling (941) 366-9000. Their website is www.fst2000.org .

Known as Sarasota's Contemporary Theatre, Florida Studio Theatre was founded in 1973 by Jon Spelman.  Starting out as a small touring company, FST traveled to places such as migrant camps and prisons.  The company eventually settled down into a permanent home, acquiring the former Woman's Club building - now renamed the Keating Theatre.  In the years that followed, Florida Studio Theatre established itself as a major force in American Theatre, presenting contemporary theatre in its three theatre venues: the Keating Theatre, the Goldstein Cabaret and its newest space, the Gompertz Theatre.
