Series Kicks Off October 11th!

West Palm Beach's longest residing professional theatre, Palm Beach Dramaworks, announced the 4th year of their innovative educational initiative, "Master Playwright Series" --- examining the life, work and contributions of the world's great playwrights. This series examines three playwrights, with two segments devoted to each author. The first segment is an overview of the playwright's life and work, and a presentation of scenes by professional actors. The second segment is a staged reading of one of that playwright's important plays. In addition to the readings, the audience will be invited to discuss the work and themes. Mark Perlberg serves as Executive Producer and the program is sponsored by Nancy and Jay Parker.

The first in the series will be devoted to Nobel Prize-winning playwright, George Bernard Shaw. Veteran stage and screen actor Barry Ingham will be presenting the "George Bernard Shaw Overview," on October 11th, 12th, 18th and 19th; following will be a staged reading of Mrs. Warren's Profession on November 1st & 2nd. Mrs. Warren's Profession centers on the relationship between Mrs. Warren, a prostitute, and her prude of a daughter, Vivie. Vivie is shocked to find out that her mother's wealth was obtained by running high-class brothels. Vivie momentarily makes peace with her mother, until she learns that the business is still in operation.

Barry Ingham has appeared on both the West End and Broadway starring in such classics as The Magistrate and Tartuffe and original productions of Aspects of Love and Jekyll & Hyde. As a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, Mr. Ingham appeared in several productions including Julius Caesar, Twelfth Night, and Winter's Tale. He was professor at the University of Texas at Austin, theatre consultant to Baylor University and is artistic advisor to the Shakespeare Society of New York.

"August Strindberg Overview" will follow on December 27th & 28th and January 3rd & 4th with a reading of Miss Julie on January 24th & 25th. Miss Julie tells the story of an aristocratic young woman trying to escape the constraints of her upper class society. Her actions and behavior alienate the people around her and ultimately lead to her death.

The final segment will highlight the work of Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson. On February 28th, March 1st, 7th and 8th scenes from his plays will be performed as part of the "August Wilson Overview" followed by a staged reading of Radio Golf on March 28th & 29th. The last play that Wilson wrote, Radio Golf is the contemporary story of a prosperous entrepreneur who strives to become the first black mayor of Pittsburgh. When old secrets begin to surface, his past could be his worst opponent.

Palm Beach Dramaworks is a non-profit, professional theatre and is a member of the Theatre Communications Group, the South Florida Theatre League, Southeastern Theatre Conference, Florida Professional Theatres Association, Florida Theatre Conference, and the Palm Beach County Cultural Council.

"August Strindberg Overview" - Monday, December 27th (7PM), Tuesday, December 28th (3PM & 7PM), Monday, January 3rd (7PM), Tuesday, January 4th (3PM & 7PM); "Miss Julie" - Monday, January 24th (7PM) & Tuesday, January 25th (3PM & 7PM). "August Wilson Overview" - Monday, February 28th (7PM), Tuesday, March 1st (3PM & 7PM), Monday, March 7th (7PM), Tuesday, March 8th (3PM & 7PM); "Radio Golf" - Monday, March 28th (7PM) & Tuesday, March 29th (3PM & 7PM).

Individual tickets to each segment may be purchased for $15 each; $10 for students; a discount package, which includes one ticket to each of the six segments, is also available for $75. The theatre is located in the heart of downtown West Palm Beach, at 322 Banyan Boulevard, between Dixie Highway and Olive Avenue, Florida 33401. The NEW official parking facility for the theatre is the City Center Garage located at the corner of Banyan Blvd. and Dixie Highway. Parking is offered across the street for a nominal fee, or in the City Garage on the corner of Olive Avenue and Banyan Boulevard for $1.00 per hour with the first hour free. Parking is free on Sunday, only in the garage and at city meters.
