"A Moon for the Misbegotten," "The Chairs," "The Weir"
and the Florida Premiere of "Peter and Jerry"
9th Anniversary Season Will Begin October 17th
West Palm Beach's only resident professional theatre, Palm Beach Dramaworks announces Eugene O'Neill's last completed drama, "A Moon for the Misbegotten" will kick off its 9th anniversary season on Friday, October 17th (8PM) at their intimate downtown theatre (322 Banyan Boulevard.) The 2008-09 slate of productions will continue with a roster of plays including "The Chairs" by Eugene Ionesco, "The Weir" by Connor McPherson and the Florida premiere production of "Peter and Jerry" by Edward Albee.
"A season featuring plays written by O'Neill, Albee, Ionesco, and McPherson, is one filled with intense, challenging, and intellectually stimulating works by some of the most renowned classic and contemporary playwrights of the last sixty years. We're pleased to present these seldom produced, thought-provoking plays to South Florida audiences," said William Hayes, Founder and Producing Artistic Director.
With a mid-October debut, the season opens with Eugene O'Neill's "A Moon for the Misbegotten." Set during a long moonlit night, the play focuses on James Tyrone and Josie Hogan, who fueled by drink and lust, find companionship and solace, as they reveal to each other the grief, longing and unrequited love they've hidden from the world. (October 17th – November 30th.) The second offering follows with "The Chairs," Eugene Ionesco's absurdist work, which centers on two characters, known as Old Man and Old Woman, who frantically prepare chairs for a series of invisible guests who are coming to hear an orator reveal the old man's recent discovery. With a twist ending, Ionesco's tragic farce is sure to raise new doubt in the never-ending quest for the meaning of life.(December 19 – February 1st.) Continuing on February 20th, Connor McPherson's Olivier Award-winning play "The Weir," serves up chilling and unsettling ghost stories set in a local tavern of the Irish countryside. The story-telling transcends more than just what goes bump in the night, but explores the feelings of loss and loneliness that haunts the lives of everyone. (February 20th - April 5th.) The winter season's final offering, concludes with "Peter and Jerry," by Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize- winner Edward Albee. Fresh from its Off-Broadway debut last fall, the drama delves deeper into his acclaimed play The Zoo Story by adding a first-act, Homelife, leading to Peter's fateful meeting with Jerry. In this play, primal magnetism and exploration is taken to a new level as Peter makes that fateful journey where he meets Jerry in the Central Park. (April 24th – June 14th.)
