The musical Pippin debuts at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre tonight, May 18 and tomorrow, May 19, 2012. Perfomed by students from the Theatre's Paul and Sandra Goldner Conservatory of Performing Arts, Pippin tells the story of the young prince Pippin and his quest for the secrets of true happiness and fulfillment. He seeks it in the glories of the battlefield, in temptation and the intrigues of political power – but in the end, he finds it in the simple pleasures of home and family.
"Each of us knows what it feels like to search for meaning – to search for who we are – and we particularly experience this feeling during adolescence," said Julie Rowe, the Conservatory's director of education. "It's been wonderful to explore this particular story with our Conservatory students."
Pippin is a hip, tongue-in-cheek fairy tale that captivated Broadway audiences in the 1970s and continues to appeal to the 'young at heart' everywhere. The pop-influenced score by Oscar-winning composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, Children of Eden, Disney's Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Prince of Egypt) bursts with one show-stopping number after another, including the hits Magic To Do, Corner of the Sky and Extraordinary. The show features a cast of 54 students (ages 7-18) and Bob Fosse jazz choreography.
"Pippin's journey is about being true to who we really are, listening to our hearts and not succumbing to peer pressure. To top it off, our students have been learning the renowned choreography of Tony Award-winning choreographer Bob Fosse," Rowe said. "What better cast to tell this story than our wonderful Conservatory students?"
Pippin is directed by Conservatory instructors and Broadway veterans Anna McNeely and Brian Andrews. Also assisting are acting coach Lea Roy and vocal coach Sarah-Helen Land. Pippin will take place Friday and Saturday, May 18 and 19, at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets for Pippin are $20 for adults; $15 for children. To purchase tickets, call the box office at (561) 575-2223.
