Outre Theatre Company Presents HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH

The Outré Theatre Company announces its final production of the 2017/18 season, the sensational Hedwig and the Angry Inch, book by John Cameron Mitchell, music and lyrics by Stephen Trask. Starring the multi-talented Mike Westrich as Hedwig and the award-winning Kat Gold as Yitzhak, Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a glorious celebration of the genderqueer and the outsider, and is a fitting capstone to Outré's sixth full season.

"In Hedwig, John Cameron Mitchell has crafted a beautifully flawed character," explains Skye Whitcomb, Outré's Artistic Director and the director of the production. "She's funny and foul-mouthed, tragic and touching, and wonderfully, wonderfully human. Mitchell himself said that she wasn't a woman or a man, but a 'gender of one,' which I think is an incredibly necessary, complex way that we need to look at gender, especially in today's society."

The musical is styled in a cabaret/rock show style, with Hedwig a genderqueer rock singer who is touring the country, playing in dive bars and seedy venues. Discarding the fourth wall entirely, Hedwig tells their story to the audience, from their lonely childhood in East Berlin, to their botched gender reassignment surgery, to their desperate search for love and completion.

Outré is proud to partner with SunServe on this production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. SunServe is the first LGBTQ social service agency in South Florida. Recognizing that the entire LGBTQ community has the right to quality care, SunServe's mission is to provide critical life assistance and professional mental health services with an emphasis on economically disadvantaged, marginalized youth, and senior adults in the greater South Florida metropolitan area.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch is directed by Skye Whitcomb and music directed by Carbonell Award winner Caryl Fantel.

The cast includes:

Kat Gold (Yitzhak) holds a BFA in Musical Theatre from the University of West Florida. Most recently seen in Broward Stage Door's Saturday Night Fever and Smokey Joe's Cafe, she received a 2017 Silver Palm Award and a Carbonell Award Nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical for her work as Sarraghina in Nine the Musical.

Mike Westrich (Hedwig) is a graduate of the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in NYC and is a member of Actors' Equity. He has been a recipient of multiple Silver Palm Awards, and was nominated for a Carbonell Award for his performance as Nathan Leopold in Outré's production of Thrill Me. He was most recently seen in MNM's Little Shop of Horrors as Seymour, and continues to tour as Harry in the children's production of The Adventures of Bella and Harry: Let's Visit London, a role he originated. Some other past credits include Spamalot, Hair, The Timekeepers, Rent, Avenue Q, Stars of David, and tick, tick...BOOM!
